One time, Eamon (formerly of the band and still making occasional appearances), started chatting to me. It took me a minute to realise who he was, when I explained I was used to seeing him with a hat/helmet/bass drum on his head. My current favourite design is this one, printed on lovely-feel earth positive material (image from the BSP Shop): One idea is this: Men working on the docks at Annapolis, Maryland, in the late 1600s unloaded a great deal of tea. Navy men wearing the equivalent of tank tops offended the British Royal Family who insisted they cover their arms enough to hide their armpits.
I personally love a classic, fitted t-shirt. I think they are flattering on any body type and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I also love that there are endless options when it comes to finding the perfect t-shirt – from different necklines to sleeve lengths to fabrications, the possibilities are endless! Why does this happen? When I launder five t-shirts, two or three get turned inside out. But, when I turn five T-shirts inside out before laundering, no shirts ever get turned right side out. The first thing that comes to my mind is questioning the research behind this. How many iterations were tested? If it was two each, the research and the question are highly suspect. Let’s say for argument that this was a reliable average after five hundred washes each way, while I suspect neither this nor the above extreme are true, but the testing was somewhere in-between.
Most traditional clothing has seams which stick inward. (Newer stuff can be made from tubes and/or seamed in such ways as to bury the seam inside a flat stitch.) Both friction and the weight of the seam (small though that weight is) trying to escape the shirt’s center of mass as it’s swished around, could contribute to the result. The fabric could also contribute in a similar way. If it’s smoother on one side, friction could have a tendency to drag in a particular direction, more likely flipping only in one direction. While difficult to answer with certainty, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if some university students have already done a study on this. The reason the hems are inside, is because the garments were built in-side-out, then reversed for wearing. When you wash or tumble dry, the natural stresses on the fabric are pulling it back into that original, flatter shape. According to the fabric, you’re wearing it in-side-out.
